Giving Back What Was Given: A First-Generation Latina’s Mission
I am Celeste Zapata, a first-generation Latina student and proud daughter of hardworking immigrants who have sacrificed tirelessly to provide me with access to education. I’ve been fortunate to grow up surrounded by a strong and supportive community that has always encouraged me to become the best version of myself.
Because of this, I have developed a deep appreciation for community and a passion for bringing people together.
In May 2022, I was honored to receive the Yanira Serrano Scholarship. This opportunity had a meaningful impact on my academic journey, as it helped support my transition into college when I began my studies at the College of San Mateo in Fall 2022. With the help of this scholarship, I was able to purchase essential textbooks and focus more fully on my education.
I am currently a student at San José State University, where I am majoring in Business with a concentration in Marketing, and I am on track to graduate in Spring 2027. As a first-generation college student, earning my bachelor’s degree is an accomplishment that fills me with immense pride. I look forward to pursuing a career that allows me to stay connected to my community—building meaningful relationships, uplifting others, and making a positive impact.
From Blueprint to Portfolio: Gustavo’s Path in Business and Property Management
Receiving the Yanira Serrano Garcia Scholarship during high school was a defining moment in my journey. It provided me with the financial support needed to continue my education without creating additional financial strain, allowing me to stay focused on my goals and long term vision. Because of that support, I was able to attend De Anza College, where I spent two years building a strong academic foundation.
During my time at De Anza, I maximized that opportunity by earning four Associate of Science degrees in Business Administration, Real Estate, Communications, and Computer Business Liberal Arts. This experience not only strengthened my academic discipline but also helped me discover my passion for business and the real estate industry.
I later transferred to San Diego State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and a minor in Real Estate. During my time at SDSU, I was actively involved on campus by joining business focused organizations and taking on leadership roles that helped me grow both personally and professionally. These experiences strengthened my ability to lead, collaborate, and stay engaged within a competitive academic environment.
Today, I am proud to be working in the real estate industry, specifically in property management with Trinity Property Consultants. In my current role, I continue to grow by taking on leadership responsibilities, strengthening my operational and strategic skill set, and gaining deeper insight into the multifamily housing industry.
Looking ahead, my future is more than bright. I am committed to continuing my growth within the industry, expanding my knowledge, and taking on greater leadership opportunities. My long term goal is to build and own my own real estate portfolio, creating lasting impact through investment, community development, and entrepreneurship.
I am truly grateful for the Yanira Serrano Garcia Scholarship and the impact it has had on my life. It not only supported me financially, but also empowered me to pursue my goals with confidence and purpose.
A Dream Made Possible: Elkin’s Path to UC Berkeley
Elkin Lopez Argueta reflects on his journey from uncertainty to becoming a first-generation student at UC Berkeley. As an immigrant, the path wasn’t easy, but the Yanira Serrano Scholarship provided both financial relief and the emotional support he needed to keep going. Through this support, Elkin found confidence, community, and a deeper sense of purpose. Today, he is building his future, honoring his family’s sacrifices, and representing his roots with pride—proving that with belief and support, even the biggest dreams can become reality.
